Health promotion is a process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants and thereby improve their health. This definition is based on the World Health Organisation Bangkok Charter (2005)

Health promotion not only embraces actions directed at strengthening the skills and capabilities of individuals but also includes changing social, environmental, political and economic conditions to reduce their impact on communities and individual health.

HEALTH PROMOTION at Castlemaine District Community Health

Castlemaine District Community Health is committed to promoting physical activity, healthy eating and oral health in the Mount Alexander Shire.

Castlemaine District Community Health maintains and promotes a range of physical activity and healthy eating groups and programs. These include Tai Chi, Heartmoves, Strength Training, Community Gym, Walking groups, Make a Change, and Making a Move. Partnerships with local agencies and stakeholders have assisted with the expansion of sustainable and affordable programs in townships throughout the district. The need for further expansion is explored through regular Come & Try activities.

Castlemaine District Community Health is also committed to developing healthier environments for children and youth. We actively encourage health promoting early learning centres, primary and secondary schools throughout the Shire.

Castlemaine District Community Health is committed to minimising the spread of blood borne viruses, such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C , among injecting drug users and to the wider community.

Castlemaine District Community Health encourages the use of sterile equipment by injecting drug users through providing and promoting a Needle Syringe Program . The Needle Syringe Program aims to reduce the spread of blood borne viruses and other harms associated with injecting drug use. Information, education and referral are part of this program.

Castlemaine District Community Health has a strong partnership with the Maldon Hospital , and jointly runs a number of health promotion programs, including the Maldon Walking Group .
